Family visas

A UK family visa is issued to Australians who want to join their family members living permanently in the UK.

Do you qualify for a UK family visa?

You will need a family visa if you want to join a family member in the UK for more than six months.

You can apply to live with your:

  • Partner or spouse
  • Fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner
  • Child
  • Parent

You cannot apply for a UK family visa if you are:

  • In the UK on a work visa
  • In the UK on a Visitor visa that’s valid for six months or less

This rule doesn’t apply for the UK Marriage Visitor visa, or if you’re waiting for a final court decision on a family or divorce matter.

Types of family visas

There are different visas within the family visa category. The one you apply for depends on your relationship to the person you’re joining.

UK spouse visa  

The UK spouse visa is issued to those who want to join their spouse or partner in the UK who is either a British citizen, a settled person, a refugee or someone under humanitarian protection.

You must either be married to, in a civil partnership or long-term relationship with the person you are joining in the UK.

UK dependant visa

A child can come to the UK as the dependant of a person who is entering the UK on a qualifying visa, has indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or is a British citizen.
